Senator Anna M. Caballero (D-Merced) named Tamara Cobb Woman of the Year 2023 (video) for Senate District 14, and presented her with a Resolution at the State Capitol in Sacramento on March 20. The ceremony, a part of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus: California Women Making Herstory, honors women selected by each member of the Assembly and Senate who make significant contributions to their community. This year, Senator Caballero selected Tamara Cobb, a native of Merced and a wonderful community leader.

Ms. Cobb was the first Black family support officer to work for the Merced District Attorney’s office and is a founding member of the Merced Black Parallel School Board, an organization that advocates for transparency in education funding. Ms. Cobb, a foster Parent since 1990, is the current President and Organizer of the Merced MLK Jr. Committee. She also serves on the board of Golden Valley Health Centers as a Consumer Representative.

Tamara Cobb earned a degree from Merced College in the Administration of Justice. While completing her studies she sought and initiated a position as the first investigator for the Merced County Public Defender’s Office.

Ms. Cobb is very active in the community and serves as a United Domestic Worker Union Representative. She is an Education Director and Executive Board Member for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Executive Board Member for the Merced Black Parallel School Board, the Merced County Office of Education Committee of African American Student Success, the African American Health initiative with Healthy House Coalition, and she is a Merced County Beachwood/Franklin Board member.
