Young Legislators Program
Each summer Senator Caballero’s office hosts the Young Legislators Program (YLP) for local students in 9th-12th grade. This is a summer program that provides an introduction to the workings of government and strives to build a strong foundation for youth who want to get involved in the leadership of their community.
Students learn the aspects of legislation and community-issue awareness through seminars and a trip to the California State Capitol. The program is designed to spark interest in young adults to become civically engaged in the democratic process.
In 2024, students in the program heard directly from local representatives, including members of Congress, and state and local elected officials, gaining valuable insights into what it means to be a public servant.

Quotes from YLP Students:
“This program was an amazing experience that helped me come out of my comfort zone and meet new people.”
– Alexis Garcia, North Salinas High School, Resident of the City of Salinas
“I’m so thankful for this experience because it not only pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it sparked my curiosity in politics. I got to meet new people and learned valuable perspectives of different roles in government. Most importantly, it reminded me the value of MY voice.”
– Kimberly Bojorquez, Resident of the City of Selma
“If put together, great minds can make an impact.”
– Breanna Rincon, Dos Palos High School, Resident of the City of Dos Palos
“My generation isn’t just filled with the future presidents, senators and lawyers, but is filled with young individuals who are open-minded and determined to do what it takes to achieve our future goal of altering the nation for an overall better society for everyone.”
– Harveet Sandhu, Fowler High School, Resident of Fresno County
“The information that was presented today was very valuable and helpful because it helps youth leaders get an idea of the functions of government and how each branch, person, and department plays a role in shaping our society, laws, policies, and even legislation. It informs us that every law we pass isn't just something random or enforced by the President; it's a major group effort of multiple people who come to agree or disagree, and that every opinion or voice is heard.”
– Alexa Wipes, McLane High School, Resident of Fresno County
“I am definitely interested in getting involved in my community, which is what both of the speakers talked about. The backgrounds they came from (community environmental enrichment and education) were very applicable and relevant to my experience as a teenager in Merced!”
– Alexander Hampton, Merced High School, Resident of Merced County
“Today’s topics and speakers related to my life and interests because I care about how decisions are made in my community, especially around education and the environment. Hearing from the school board trustee and the youth commissioner showed me that young people can have a voice in shaping schools and protecting natural spaces. It made me feel like I could get involved in issues I care about, too.”
– Delynne Alfaro, Mendota High School, Resident of Fresno County
“I can apply how Mr.Kus emphasized the importance of registering to vote. He pointed out how important it is to participate in local elections since that impacts the community directly.”
– Emily Ortiz, Madera South High School, Resident of Madera County
