Senator Caballero’s Important Message for Renters

Hello Friends and Families in SD 12:

For renters in California already facing some of the highest rents nationally due to a lack of housing supply, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed too many to the edge of homelessness. From all parts of Senate District 12, I consistently hear from people that they fear eviction.

Initially, the Governor’s action prevented evictions until August 31, 2020. Over the past few weeks, I worked hard with my colleagues in the California Senate, Assembly, and the Governor’s Office to craft and pass AB 3088, the “Tenant, Homeowner, and Small Landlord Relief and Stabilization Act of 2020.” The most important thing to know right now is this:  You cannot face eviction until February 1, 2021, if you cannot pay the rent because of the pandemic.

First, talk to your landlord, who must provide a document for you to complete and sign, and it must be in the same language as your rental agreement. Click HERE to read the document you will need to sign.  Your landlord will also provide you a notification about your late rents. Review your notification, and make sure that it looks like one of these notifications HERE.

Second, you must pay 25% of your rents from September 1, 2020 through January 31, 2021, and you still will have to pay back due rent in full. You are still responsible to your landlord for the full amount of the rent. The goal here is to prevent immediate evictions while the economy, hopefully, gets closer to a full reopening.

Please take care of yourselves, your loved ones, and your community by continuing to wash your hands often, wear a mask, and maintain a safe social distance from people in public.

Sincerely,

Senator Anna M. Caballero
